Secondary schools and colleges Why not support Richard House Children’s Hospices as part of your DofE volunteering section? £20 Challenge The objective of this challenge is simple: you and your class-mates will be given £20 and a set period of time to turn that £20 into more. How you do this is up to you, within legal boundaries and with permission from your school of course! You will need to use the strengths of your team to manage the project, making sure to use your creativity, planning and budgeting skills to make the most of your £20. You will also be in competition with other teams so make sure you keep your strategies and ideas secret and use all your resourcefulness to innovate and creatively grow this fund! How would you grow £20? The more imaginative you can be the better, if you are asking friends or family to support you then a new or engaging fundraising idea will get them more inspired to help! We also have lots of fundraising materials you can use! Download your guide today! Assemblies We would love to visit your school and explain the important role hospices play in many families’ lives. We can run an interactive session or whole school assembly where we can learn, read, talk, explore and understand more about children’s hospices together. All of our assembly themes are pupil-friendly and age-appropriate, focusing on all the fun and laughter that fills our hospices. These assemblies are completely free of charge, and led by a member of our Community Engagement Team or an experienced volunteer ambassador. We are able to adapt our visit to fit with your current term’s themes or topics, or to the experiences of staff and students at your school. We can also provide seasonal assemblies, around Christmas, Easter, Lent or other religious holidays. Our main goal is to spread awareness of how Shooting Star Children’s Hospices make every moment count for babies, children and young people with life-limiting illnesses, and their families. KS1 Assembly Our primary school assembly is based around a virtual tour of one of our hospices. Throughout the PowerPoint presentation, children will learn about our sensory rooms, hydrotherapy pool and all the fun activities we have on offer. We’re always sure to engage with pupils by asking questions throughout, and giving them the opportunity to ask questions as we go along. There are very few topics more difficult to discuss with children than serious illness and death, but our assembly can broach these subjects in an accessible and sensitive way. KS2 Assembly Our secondary school assembly is also based around a virtual tour of one of our hospices. Many students will start the presentation with a preconceived (generally negative) idea of hospices, often stemming from exposure to adult hospices, but throughout the assembly we challenge these notions. Together we explore how our sensory rooms help children to relax, our music therapy team provide emotional release to siblings of life-limited children and the importance of memory making for families.
